The Government Unani and Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital were established in 1985 with a vision to produce qualified, skillful Unani and Ayurvedic physicians under the project of “Development of the Indigenous system of Medicine”. The academic session was started in 1989-90 with 100 students and the first class was started 10 March 1990. The campus comprising College, Library, 100 bedded Hospital, Production & Research unit, Girls Hostel, Staff Quarters and a Mosque. It is situated in the three-acre area of land, having a well-bounded campus and excellent academic atmosphere at Mirpur 13, Dhaka. It offers five years BUMS and BMAS course with a one-year compulsory internship. Both degrees are recognized in Bangladesh and this institution is under the affiliated of the University of Dhaka. The four-storied college building divides in an Unani and Ayurvedic division consisting classrooms, anatomy dissection room, seminar hall, museums, laboratories, a large gallery, audio-visual room, and library. The three stored hospitals with the strength of 100 beds along with emergency, outpatient and inpatient service. Seven departments of OPD provide serving average 200–250 patients daily.
The indoor department consists of male and female wards. Hospital has also a well-equipped pathology department, radio-imaging department, Panchakarma unit, Acupuncture unit, family planning unit, yoga unit, and two dispensaries. Production & Research unit is just attached with hospital along with some machinery for producing quality Unani & Ayurvedic Medicine for managing the OPD & IPD patients. The hostel is providing residential facilities and well-equipped environment for stay and study as well. The staff members from outside are provided with quarters with all the amenities so that staff can contribute and concentrate on better teaching and training. The Institution has well maintained Herbal garden with more than 100 species of medicinal plants including rare species for practical demonstration to students.
